Updates and Reminders

There is a lot happening in our little classroom lately! Here are a few updates and reminders:

*The students have been busy in math! They have continued to work on measuring. They have also been learning about polygons. This can be a tricky concept for 2nd graders, so I encourage you to practice with them at home. Here are just a few tips:

TRI    3
QUAD    4
PENTA   5
HEX    6  (six)
OCTA   8

*Today is our last day of learning about magnets from Mrs. Bender. Our class will go to Miss Mikle to learn about light and heat next. The 2nd graders seem to really love switching groups for Science!

*We have been learning about our learning styles! With the help of Mrs. Foley, we have learned about kineshethic, auditory and visual learning styles.  Yesterday in class, we created goal binders. We will be filling them with various "tests" about our learning styles and goals that we will work on.

*2nd Quarter Report Cards will be coming out on Friday. Mr. Welnetz will send out an e-mail alert when they are ready for you to view. If you have any questions or concerns about your child's report card, please do not hesitate to contact me!

*Students have been recently been tested with a new running record for reading. Based on these results, I will be able to form new reading groups. When your child comes home with a book, please make sure they re-read it with you for accuracy, confidence and comprehension skills. You will notice that longer books with more comprehension will be with your child for longer periods of time than shorter books.

Tomorrow, January 11th is our school's annual Read-A-Thon! I have included a snip of the flyer that Mr. Welnetz sent out. We hope to see you all here!

*Remember to wear your "Read 20" clothing tomorrow to school, as well!

Updates and Reminders

We have some fun things happening at school this week! Check out the reminders:

Tuesday: Panther Apparel and/or colors day
Wednesday: Walk the Halls
Thursday: School Store and Reading Night after school

A few more updates:

*As noted in the previous post: This week, our class will go to Mrs. Bender's room during Science time. They will be learning about magnets. (Mrs. Bender's class will go to Ms. Mikle's class to learn about Light and Heat and Ms. Mikle's class will come to me to learn about Sound. We will rotate again in two weeks so that every 2nd grader will have experienced each unit.)

*In math, the students have officially started unit 3. They have been working on measurement with centimeters and inches. They needed a little extra practice with remembering to start from the 0 instead of the 1 when drawing lines. This would be a great thing to practice at home! The 2nd graders have also been focusing on the difference between a square and a rectangle. They learned that a square has four equal sides with four right angles. A rectangle has opposite sides of equal length and four right angles.

*Throughout the day, we have been working on growing as learners. We have been choosing our own learning spots each day and focusing on where we learn best in the classroom. We have also been working on setting goals. More information will be coming out on this as the year progresses.

Instrument Projects

The 2nd graders completed their sound unit! They wrapped it up by bringing in instruments that they made at home. The instruments needed to be able to demonstrate a change in pitch and a change in volume. They did a wonderful job!

This week, our class will go to Mrs.
