The Night Before Christmas...
As a fun seasonal reading/writing assignment, I read to the class Jan Brett's version of A Night Before Christmas. Afterwards, the students had a chance to write about their own night before Christmas traditions. They are really growing as writers and I loved reading about all of their unique memories and traditions. So cute!
Here are some of the finished pieces of writing:
Text Feature Scavenger Hunt
The 2nd graders are learning about text features in informational text books. They are doing really great with it! They are learning about titles, the table of contents, headings, photographs, glossary, index, labels, captions, diagrams, charts, maps, special words (bold, italic, underlined) and comparisons. To show me what they know, they got to work with a partner and complete a text feature scavanger hunt. Using a large pile of non fiction books and a list of text features, they needed to find examples of each text feature and label it with a post it note. Next, they were asked to take a picture of each text feature and upload it into book creator. Be sure to quiz your 2nd grader on different text features at home.

3rd Grade Popcorn Sale
The Suamico third graders are selling popcorn this week. If you would like to order some popcorn (money will be used to buy material to make tie blankets which will be donated to local nursing homes), please allow your child to bring $1.00 to school for Thursday of this week.
Here is the note from Mrs. White:
This group has decided to presell popcorn for $1.00 to students and staff. The profit will be used to purchase money to make blankets for area nursing homes.
The group will be making the popcorn on Thursday afternoon and delivering Friday morning.
Later today students will put a Ziplock bag and class list in your mailbox. Could you please check off student names as they pay for popcorn on Wednesday or Thursday. Students will come by your classroom to pick up the order list Thursday morning.
We will return the student list to you with the Popcorn delivery on Friday morning. Remember to include yourself on your order list if you would like a bag of popcorn.

Sledding Tomorrow
Tomorrow, Thursday, December 14th, the 2nd graders will be going sledding with Mr. Murphy in the morning in place of their regular gym class on Friday. This is a change in their normal schedule. Please remember to pack snow pants, boots, hats, gloves and scarves to keep warm.
As always, please do not hesitate to contact me with questions or concerns.
Thanks!
Science
In Science class, the 2nd graders have been having a blast learning about volume and pitch. Yesterday, they got to explore with some tuning forks to see if they can control the volume and pitch. They did great. It certainly wasn't quiet in here. ;)
Learning is fun!! I just love this picture. :)
Holiday Writers
The 2nd graders have had some fun with writing lately! In response to a festive book we read, Moosletoe, the 2nd graders were asked to reflect on a time that everything wasn't going "perfectly perfect" and how they fixed it. In Moosletoe, the main character was so caught up on having everything be "perfectly perfect" for Christmas, that he wound up forgetting to get a tree! He made the problem better by improvising and allowing his family to decorate himself as the tree.
We also read a book called, "The New and Improved Santa." In this story, Santa takes a New Year's resolution maybe just a bit too far. He ends up being unrecognizable to children. The 2nd graders got to come up with their own new version of Santa and write about why he ended up being that way. We sure do have some creative minds in 2nd grade! So impressive!
